dust-free pin- and shot-holes of 0.5 to 3.0 mm in diameter, there can be over 100 holes per m²
wood surrounding the holes shows elongate fungal stains
the presence of fine dust or solid cylinders of frass, pushed out of the holes and deposited by beetles on the bark of standing trees or on the surface of logs and timber
sap and gum flowing out from the borehole, sometimes with debris or dead beetles stuck to the exudate
